Since 2017 we have had licensed facilities for the storage of chemical products (APQ) that allow our customers to store ADR goods, giving the company a logistics hub with high added value.
Storing chemical products is a critical task for any company handling these substances: getting it wrong means serious risks to workers' health and to the environment. At Doseguer we meet every requirement to do this work properly.
Proper storage minimises the risk of fires, explosions, spills and releases of toxic gases — events that can end in serious injury, damage to the facilities and significant environmental consequences.
The regulations governing storage
The European regulations REACH (1907/2006) and CLP (1272/2008) lay the foundations for placing chemical products on the market and for their classification, packaging and labelling, with the aim of protecting human health and the environment.
In Spain, Royal Decree 656/2017 governs the storage of hazardous chemical products and sets the safety rules for facilities used to store, load, unload and transfer these substances.
On top of that come specific rules for particular families — flammable liquids, compressed gases, corrosive substances — setting out safety requirements of their own for each type.
How chemical products are classified
Classification determines how each substance has to be stored and handled:
According to whether their structure contains carbon, which shapes how they are stored and handled.
The physical state determines the storage method and the safety measures required.
They must be kept away from heat sources, with specific fire safety measures.
They call for resistant containers, strict separation and protection for staff.
Brief stays before dispatch, with a safety approach of their own.
Long stays, which call for a different approach to control, inspection and maintenance.
How safe storage works
Containers and tanks must resist the substance they hold and have containment systems that prevent spills. The layout of the warehouse has to allow safe access and minimise the risk of dangerous interaction between incompatible substances.
To that add ventilation and temperature control, which prevent hazardous vapours from building up and keep heat-sensitive substances stable; drainage and spill control systems, which stop a leak from spreading; and the personal protective equipment used by the staff handling the goods.
